A podiatrist has undergone extensive training in the discipline of surgery. After attending 4 years of podiatry school we undergo residency training where we regularly participate in foot and ankle surgery. The foot and ankle are complex structures which should only be operated on by an expert in their anatomy and function. As podiatrists we perform surgery only when needed and conservative care has failed or is not an option.
