Many different diseases can make an individual be at high risk for developing wounds on their feet which can lead to an infection or worse, an amputation. Diseases such as Diabetes, Peripheral Arterial disease (poor blood flow), Peripheral Neuropathy (numbness in the feet and legs), and immune suppression are common problems putting people at increased risk.
If you are at increased risk for wounds on your feet seeing a podiatrist on a regular basis can significantly lower the potential for infection and amputation. Podiatrists typically see patients who are at risk for wounds every 2-3 months to help prevent development of wounds. If you are at high risk and develop a wound, call to schedule an appointment immediately. Any opening in the skin is a potential pathway for a bacterial infection which can progress rapidly in immune compromised patients.
